Investigations have commenced following an incident in which a 12-year-old boy was bitten by a tagged dingo on K’gari, Queensland. The event took place around 12:15 PM when the boy, along with two other children and an adult, were playing in shallow waters near Yidney Rocks. A male dingo approached unexpectedly and bit the boy, prompting nearby fishers to intervene with a stick to drive the dingo away.
The dingo retreated but trailed the group back to their accommodation after they inadvertently left the stick behind. The boy sustained superficial puncture wounds and a laceration and received treatment from paramedics.
Rangers from Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service responded swiftly, identifying the offending dingo through photographs. They are currently investigating the matter and keeping a watchful eye on the animal.
Authorities remind visitors on K’gari to supervise children closely, travel in groups, carry a stick for defence, avoid feeding dingoes, camp in fenced areas, and refrain from running if they encounter one. There have been six high-risk dingo interactions reported this year, compared to 23 in the previous year.
