Irish boxer John Cooney has tragically passed away at 28, just one week after being hospitalised following his defeat to Nathan Howells for the Celtic super-featherweight title in Belfast. A statement from his promoter Mark Dunlop, released on behalf of his family and fiancée Emmaleen, confirmed his death after a week-long battle for his life.

Cooney’s fight against Howells ended in the ninth round, leading to an emergency surgery due to an intracranial hemorrhage. His family expressed gratitude toward the staff at Belfast’s Royal Victoria Hospital for their efforts to save him and acknowledged the support and prayers from the public during this difficult time.

Described as a beloved son, brother, and partner, Cooney’s passing has left a deep void, with his family stating, “It will take us all a lifetime to forget how special he was.” Cooney had previously claimed the Celtic title in November 2023 after defeating Liam Gaynor, marking his return to boxing after a year’s absence due to a hand injury. Former boxing champion Barry McGuigan expressed his sorrow, stating, “It’s shocking and sad and heartbreaking.” The boxing community mourns the loss of a fighter who was seen as a kind and promising talent.
