In April 2024, Muhammad Taha, a security guard, experienced life-altering trauma when he was stabbed during a violent attack at Westfield Bondi Junction. The assailant, 40-year-old Joel Cauchi, injured six people and caused harm to ten others. Taha, who was on duty with his friend and colleague Feraz Tahir, suffered three stab wounds while attempting to save Tahir, who sadly did not survive.

As the first anniversary of the tragic event approaches, Taha reflects on the ongoing physical pain and significant mental distress he endures. He expressed the profound sorrow of waking up in the hospital to learn about his colleague’s death, which he regarded as the most painful moment of his ordeal. Despite his personal struggles, Taha was recognised for his bravery and granted permanent residency by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, which he describes as a “great honour.” He aims to contribute positively to Australia, which he now considers home.

Sadly, Taha cannot bring himself to return to Westfield Bondi Junction, opting instead to spend most of his time at home. He explained, “I’m still not able to go near that place.” His experience of trauma extends beyond him; the family of Feraz Tahir, including his brothers Sheraz and Muzafar, continue to grapple with their grief. Muzafar noted that while they might try to conceal their pain, it remains deeply ingrained within them.

Sheraz has chosen to honour his brother’s legacy by pursuing a career in security, reflecting the bravery that defined Tahir’s life. On the anniversary of the attack, survivors and community members will gather at Westfield Bondi Junction for a tribute, led by NSW Premier Chris Minns, to lay flowers and remember those affected by the horrific events of the day.
