Two years after a tragic mass casualty incident in Sydney, the bravery of several Australians has been honoured. Eight individuals received Australian Bravery Decorations from Governor-General Sam Mostyn in recognition of their extraordinary acts of courage during a stabbing attack at Bondi Junction Westfield in 2024, which resulted in six fatalities.

Among the commendable acts were those of a nurse who stayed with a dying patient and two men known as “bollard men,” Silas Despréaux and Damien Guerot, who tracked the assailant, Joel Cauchi, while armed with metal bollards. They endeavoured to slow the attacker and guided a police officer back inside the shopping centre during the chaos.

Detective Inspector Amy Scott, already on duty in the area, responded to urgent calls for assistance and entered the centre alone, ultimately pursuing Cauchi and firing the shot that ended the attack. Security guards Muhammad Taha and Faraz Tahir tried to intercept the assailant near the airbridge but tragically both were stabbed, with Mr Tahir losing his life.

Ashlee Good, who was out shopping with her child, was also attacked. Despite her injuries, she managed to pass her wounded baby to bystanders before collapsing. Ms Good has been recognised posthumously for her bravery.

Noel McLaughlin, upon learning that his wife had been stabbed, rushed through the centre to warn others about the danger before reaching her and providing first aid, although she later succumbed to her injuries. Meanwhile, nurse Catherine Molihan bravely left a secure area to help two injured men, staying with them until help arrived.

The Governor-General noted that all recipients demonstrated a “selfless, courageous, and determined response in unspeakable and horrific circumstances.” She also expressed support and remembrance for the 12 individuals who were injured, highlighting the ongoing impact of the violence witnessed that day.

If you or someone you know has been affected by the Bondi attack, support is available on a 24/7 basis.
