In a thrilling Super Rugby Pacific encounter, Queensland Reds winger Filipo Daugunu snatched victory from the jaws of defeat with a last-minute try, handing Western Force their first loss of the season. With the clock nearly expired, Reds’ acting captain Fraser McReight made the bold decision to forgo a penalty that could have levelled the scores, instead opting for a lineout. This gamble paid off as Daugunu showcased his determination by picking and driving from a ruck to score, resulting in a dramatic 28-24 win for the Reds.

Daugunu, who had earlier left the field for a head injury assessment, made a significant impact upon his return. The Force, now holding a record of 2-1 after two previous victories, displayed remarkable tenacity throughout the match. Flanker Carlo Tizzano led the charge for the Force, scoring twice and excelling in his duel with fellow Wallabies teammate McReight.

Commentator Morgan Turinui acknowledged the Force’s strong performance, noting they dominated territory and had numerous opportunities deep in the Reds’ 22 but were ultimately unable to secure the win. The Reds, fuelled by a resilient spirit and tactical bravery, managed to find a way through despite the pressure.

Reds halfback Tate McDermott also shone, providing dynamic runs that set up scoring chances, with coach Les Kiss lauding his contributions. Unfortunately, the Reds also faced a setback with centre Josh Flook leaving the field due to a hamstring injury, raising concerns for the team moving forward.

Following this match, the Reds will travel to Christchurch to face the Crusaders, while the Force shifts gears to take on the NSW Waratahs in Sydney. Force coach Simon Cron expressed disappointment at the outcome of their game, highlighting missed opportunities and a need for composure in critical moments.

Additionally, on the same day, the Force’s women’s team managed a dramatic draw against the ACT Brumbies in a Super Rugby Women’s match, with substitute Samantha Treherne scoring a late try to level the scores at 29-29. Despite a missed penalty opportunity from Brumbies’ Faitala Moleka after the siren, the Force emerged with a point, although coach Dylan Parsons voiced disappointment in their inability to control the game effectively.

As the season progresses, both teams demonstrated competitive spirit and potential, setting the stage for an exciting Super Rugby campaign ahead.
