Carlton CEO Brian Cook has dismissed any notion of panic within the club despite their winless start to the season. Historically, Carlton has not hesitated to change coaches, having replaced David Teague, Brendon Bolton, Mick Malthouse, and Brett Ratten since 2012. However, speaking on radio prior to the Blues’ loss against Collingwood, Cook emphasised the importance of maintaining a level-headed approach and consistency in their strategy.

Cook acknowledged the disappointing situation of being winless but expressed confidence in the team’s capabilities, stating, “We just haven’t been consistent.” He stressed the need to stick with their game plan while remaining open to necessary adjustments. “If that’s stability, that’s good. Admittedly (being winless) is not a good place,” he noted.

While he is not the coach, Cook believes the team is poised to improve, pointing out that they have often led at halftime in games they ultimately lost. He added, “I’m not trying to make excuses… it’s only week four.” He remains hopeful that the team will secure some victories soon, but reaffirmed that if losses continue, the management would avoid panic and maintain their current approach.

Cook reiterated the club’s ambition to finish in the top four this season, a goal he believes remains achievable despite the rocky start. He indicated that if the team failed to meet that objective, it would prompt logical and rational evaluations of the situation.

Another point of concern for Carlton is the future of ruckman Tom De Koning, who is set to become a free agent at season’s end. He has reportedly received a lucrative $1.7 million per year offer from St Kilda. Cook stated that De Koning is interested in staying with Carlton, adding, “We’re comfortable at the moment. He wants to stay. We’ll do everything we can to keep him.” However, he admitted that they might not be able to match St Kilda’s potentially higher offer.

As Cook prepares to step down and hand over responsibilities to veteran administrator Graham Wright at the end of the season, he hopes to leave the club in a strong position for the future. Wright has a successful track record, having overseen premierships at both Hawthorn and Collingwood in recent years.
