Former dual-code rugby player Wendell Sailor is facing allegations of drunken assault following an incident outside a Sydney bar on November 6. The 50-year-old, known for his significant contributions to both rugby league and rugby union, is accused of assaulting two men, one of whom he reportedly intimidated. The altercation occurred after Sailor allegedly refused to leave the premises when requested.
Sailor has pleaded not guilty to charges that include two counts of common assault, behaving in an offensive manner, refusal to leave a licensed venue, and intimidation. A hearing to contest these claims is scheduled for late February 2026, where 21 witnesses, including 12 police officers, are expected to testify. Sailor’s lawyer highlighted the case’s complexity, noting that it will rely on footage from surveillance cameras and body cams worn by police officers during the incident.
Initially anticipated to last two days, the hearing’s duration has been extended to three days, as the magistrate raised concerns about the time needed to evaluate all evidence effectively. The next court appearance for the matter is in November, ensuring that all necessary documentation is in proper order ahead of the February hearing.
Sailor, who was not required to be present in court at this time, is currently on bail. His impressive rugby career includes accolades from both rugby codes, having been the leading try-scorer for Australia during the 2000 Rugby League World Cup and scoring 13 tries in 37 games for the Australian rugby union team, including a place in the 2003 World Cup final. He concluded his NRL career in 2009 after playing 222 games, marked by successful stints with the Brisbane Broncos and St George Illawarra.
