La Rochelle’s coach, Ronan O’Gara, has strongly criticised Stade Francais flanker Romain Briatte for what he perceives as a deliberate attempt to exaggerate contact during a recent Top 14 match. This incident led to Australia’s Will Skelton being sent off after a controversial tackle on Briatte in the 20th minute, contributing to La Rochelle’s sixth consecutive defeat as they lost to Stade Francais 22-17.
O’Gara expressed his dissatisfaction with the situation, suggesting that Briatte’s fall was reminiscent of playacting seen in football, notably referencing Brazilian star Neymar. He stated, “In rugby, you have the right to clean up a ruck… Unfortunately, we are at the Parc des Princes and witnessed this. It’s a dark day for rugby to award a red card for that.”
Despite his frustration, O’Gara acknowledged that rugby requires a balance between aggression and strategy. He maintained that while he wasn’t defending Skelton’s actions—instead admitting the need for improvement—he also found Briatte’s reaction notable and not typical for rugby.
The loss may impact O’Gara’s aspirations to become the Wallabies head coach, a position he has indicated interest in, especially following his success with La Rochelle in European competitions. Skelton has praised O’Gara’s coaching expertise, highlighting that his attention to detail and connection with players would benefit the Wallabies, particularly with key talents like Bobby Valetini and Taniela Tupou. Skelton also emphasised O’Gara’s strict yet effective coaching style, noting the strong rapport they share despite occasional tough discussions.
As La Rochelle seeks to turn around their fortunes, O’Gara’s approach and philosophy will be under close scrutiny in the coming weeks.
