Bird flu confirmed on another Victorian farm: Implications for egg supply

An outbreak of the H7N8 avian influenza strain has been confirmed at a farm in Euroa, Victoria, which is near other infected locations. This has led to significant egg shortages across Australia, prompting supermarkets like Coles and Woolworths to impose purchase limits on egg sales. Coles has stated these restrictions will remain in place as they closely monitor the outbreak and work with suppliers to ensure egg availability. Woolworths has also confirmed a two-pack limit on egg purchases, except in Western Australia.

The egg industry was already facing challenges due to a previous bird flu outbreak last year, which reduced the number of laying hens in the country. Despite efforts to increase supply, heightened demand during the holiday season has exacerbated the situation. Agriculture Victoria is actively testing to determine the extent of the virus’s spread and has implemented controls to restrict poultry movements within designated areas. Stricter regulations prevent the movement of eggs and poultry products from affected farms unless a permit is obtained. Such measures aim to contain the outbreak and protect the industry while consumers continue to express concerns over the scarcity of eggs in stores.
