Queensland coach Billy Slater informed Daly Cherry-Evans over the weekend that his time with the Maroons is likely coming to an end, expressing the “disappointment” of the captain following his surprise omission from the squad. If Tom Dearden maintains his fitness, Cherry-Evans may not return to the halfback position for Queensland.

Dearden has been appointed to wear the No.7 jersey as he prepares to lead the team into a crucial match against New South Wales in Perth next Wednesday. This decision marks the first instance of Queensland replacing a captain mid-series since 1996. Slater acknowledged Cherry-Evans’s disappointment but praised him for his character and respect during their conversation.

“I don’t take any decision lightly,” Slater said, emphasising the belief that Dearden is the right fit for the role at this time. He commended Cherry-Evans for his contributions to the team, noting they will be remembered by Queensland supporters.

On Monday, Slater named a 20-player squad, which is set to be finalised into a final 17 on Tuesday afternoon. Among potential debutants is Kurt Mann, who may substitute Dearden on the bench, alongside the axing of backrower Beau Fermor.

The coach highlighted the need to adapt strategies following their performance in Game One, suggesting that simply changing personnel won’t resolve all issues. Slater’s objective is to ensure they play to the strengths of their players.

As the Maroons prepare, the Blues are set to announce their lineup after Monday’s NRL match between Canterbury and Parramatta. The current squad for Game Two includes players such as Kurt Capewell, Tom Dearden, Cameron Munster, and Kalyn Ponga, among others.

The anticipated lineup for the match looks as follows:

1. Kalyn Ponga
2. Xavier Coates
3. Robert Toia
4. Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow
5. Valentine Holmes
6. Cameron Munster
7. Tom Dearden
8. Mo Fotuaika
9. Harry Grant
10. Tino Fa’asuamaleaui
11. Kurt Capewell
12. Jeremiah Nanai
13. Pat Carrigan
14. Kurt Mann
15. Lindsay Collins
16. Reuben Cotter
17. Trent Loiero

As the series progresses, all eyes will be on how the Maroons adapt under new leadership at halfback and whether they can turn their fortunes around.
