Ceejay Greenwood, a 29-year-old individual, was reportedly driving a stolen truck on June 28 when police discovered various incriminating items, including balaclavas, gloves, and bolt cutters. Following this, authorities seized Greenwood’s mobile phone, which contained a distressing video showing a caged cat being shot at close range.
Further investigations on July 2 led to a police raid where they uncovered significant evidence, including a rifle butt, a Taser, over $18,000 in cash, 170 vials of human growth hormones, and a vest affiliated with the Rebels bikie gang. Initially facing charges related to stolen vehicles, weapons, and drug offences, Greenwood was later re-arrested on additional charges encompassing weapons and animal cruelty.
During a recent court appearance via video link at Campbelltown Local Court, Greenwood’s family was present as he sought bail. His lawyer, Ahmed Dib, argued for his release, citing Greenwood’s responsibility towards his family, especially after they had to relocate due to a recent home invasion. Dib contended that the legal process might prolong for years, potentially resulting in a lengthy custodial sentence if convicted. He noted that Greenwood had previously adhered to court orders and maintained a clean record, suggesting he deserved leniency.
However, the prosecution maintained a strong case against Greenwood, primarily due to the video evidence documenting the alleged shooting of the cat. The magistrate, Maryanne Higginson, highlighted the compelling nature of the evidence, which depicted Greenwood preparing to shoot the animal while singing and adjusting the camera’s angle towards it. Although Greenwood’s face was not clearly identifiable in the footage, his attire and surroundings would need expert analysis for corroboration.
Magistrate Higginson ultimately denied Greenwood bail, acknowledging the gravity of the charges against him. Additional allegations surfaced during the proceedings, implicating Greenwood in a stabbing incident at a rugby gala in June 2024. As the session concluded, Greenwood expressed affection towards his family by saying “I love you” into the camera. All charges have now been adjourned for future court dates.
