Ben Roberts-Smith, a former soldier of the Special Air Service (SAS) and a recipient of the Victoria Cross, has been taken into custody at Sydney Airport in connection with an investigation into alleged war crimes. The 47-year-old has served in various combat zones, including Afghanistan.

Earlier in 2023, Roberts-Smith faced defeat in a defamation case against Nine newspapers, which include The Age and the Sydney Morning Herald. This lawsuit stemmed from their reports alleging that he was involved in war crimes during his deployment in Afghanistan. The court found, under the civil standard applicable in defamation cases, that he was responsible for the deaths of four unarmed Afghan men and had violated military engagement protocols.

Despite the serious accusations, Roberts-Smith has consistently maintained his innocence regarding any misconduct during his military service. The Australian Federal Police, along with the Office of the Special Investigator, are expected to hold a press conference later today to provide further details about his arrest.
