The Wallabies’ World Cup efforts have received a significant boost with the announcement that five-eighth Ben Donaldson has re-signed with Rugby Australia until the end of 2027. Donaldson is set to compete with Tom Lynagh for the coveted Wallabies No. 10 jersey, especially with Noah Lolesio heading to Japan for a brief stint. This competition comes as both players seek to impress new coach Les Kiss ahead of the World Cup, which will take place on home soil. Lynagh’s contract extends until the end of 2026.
Following a disappointing 2023 World Cup campaign, Donaldson will now play for the Western Force, having previously started his Super Rugby Pacific journey with the Waratahs. In expressing his enthusiasm about remaining with Australian rugby, Donaldson highlighted his positive experiences in Western Australia over the past two years. He noted the strong camaraderie among the Force players, many of whom have signed long-term deals, which bodes well for the team’s future.
Excited about the upcoming Lions Tour and the Bledisloe Cup match set for Perth, Donaldson also mentioned the motivation of the upcoming 2027 World Cup and his desire to contribute to the Wallabies’ success. Having already earned 16 Test caps since his debut against Italy in 2022, Donaldson has garnered invaluable experience at both the Super Rugby Pacific and international levels.
Peter Horne, Rugby Australia’s director of high performance, expressed his satisfaction with Donaldson’s commitment, recognising him as a promising young player who exemplifies the success of the Australian Rugby pathways. Horne looks forward to Donaldson’s continued development and contributions to both the Super Rugby and Test arenas, reflecting optimism for the Wallabies’ prospects in the coming years.
