Dezi Freeman, a fugitive recently reported dead, was shot by special operations police at a remote location near Walwa, NSW. The incident occurred early in the morning after Freeman emerged from a shipping container hideout, armed with a stolen firearm and wrapped in a blanket.

Freeman, who was wanted for the murder of two police officers in August, had seemingly vanished into the bushland following his crimes. Close friend Bruce Evans revealed that he had not heard from Freeman for months and had suspected he might have been killed by police long before the final confrontation. In an interview with 9News, Evans expressed his belief that Freeman was effectively “dead” in the eyes of those who knew him, asserting, “It’s a very sad day for all of the family.”

Evans speculated on Freeman’s state of mind, suggesting that facing life imprisonment may have driven him to choose a violent end rather than surrender. He acknowledged that while he did not condone Freeman’s earlier actions, he recognised his fearless nature and was not surprised by the outcome of the standoff with police, stating, “He’s not the sort of guy that backs down.”

Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Mike Bush defended the actions of the officers involved in the operation, stating they acted “appropriately,” as events unfolded with Freeman presenting a weapon to the police. Bush indicated that peaceful resolution was possible, yet Freeman’s actions eliminated that option. He noted that the deceased had been given numerous opportunities to surrender peacefully, which he failed to take.

Evans commented on the likelihood that police were tipped off about Freeman’s hideout, stating that the significant financial reward for information would have motivated others to come forward. He remarked, “You couldn’t hide forever,” acknowledging the inevitable exposure that comes with such high stakes.

The tragic culmination of Freeman’s life serves as a somber reminder of the complexities surrounding crime and its consequences, impacting many lives beyond his own.
