Brisbane Broncos coach Michael Maguire has come to the defence of fullback Reece Walsh, whose inconsistent performance this season has drawn criticism, particularly due to his tally of 32 errors in 15 matches. However, Walsh showcased his talent during the Broncos’ comeback victory against the Dolphins, reminding fans and critics alike of his capabilities.
At just 23, Walsh has had moments of conflict on the field, notably with teammate Kotoni Staggs, and has struggled with communication, leading to mistakes. Nonetheless, their partnership has also resulted in several impressive tries. On the program 100% Footy, Phil Gould queried Maguire about Walsh’s unpredictability. Maguire expressed confidence in his player, stating, "Believe it or not, Gus, I actually do." He emphasised that while many scrutinise Walsh’s game, his training is a crucial factor behind his on-field performance.
Maguire noted the impact of Walsh’s speed on plays but acknowledged that this can sometimes result in errors, particularly with forward passes as teammates attempt to keep up. He commended Walsh for his electrifying skillset and the positive support he receives from fellow players, even during challenging moments.
Maguire also spoke about his team’s evolving dynamic, referring to them as "thrill seekers" rather than adhering strictly to traditional structures associated with his coaching style. This shift was evident when Trai Fuller scored shortly after half-time, only for the team to rally back dramatically.
