The future of hundreds of employees at Bega Cheese in Strathmerton, Victoria is now uncertain as the company announced the phased closure of its cheese processing and packaging operations by mid-2026. Approximately 300 workers are impacted by this decision, which was explained by CEO Peter Findlay as a necessary step to “simplify our operational footprint” and ensure globally competitive infrastructure.
In response to the impending transition, Bega Group stated it is committed to closely supporting the affected employees. Findlay acknowledged the significant impact of the closure and emphasized the company’s intention to handle the process with care and respect for both the employees and the surrounding community. Where possible, Bega aims to facilitate redeployment opportunities for workers during this challenging period.
The processing and packaging functions at the Strathmerton site will be relocated to Bega’s existing facility on Ridge Street in Bega, New South Wales. According to the company, this move is projected to create around 100 new jobs in the Bega Valley.
Despite this setback, Bega Group continues to operate five additional facilities in Victoria located in Tatura, Morwell, Chelsea, Koroit, and Port Melbourne, employing over 1,700 individuals. The Strathmerton facility will continue its operations until mid-2026, giving employees some time to prepare for the changes ahead.
