Rumours about Matt Payne’s future in the Supercars paddock have emerged due to his vague responses regarding his plans for 2027. As he prepares for his home double-header, questions arose about his potential move to General Motors, particularly with David Reynolds vacating a seat at Team 18 at season’s end.

Payne made a striking debut in Supercars with Grove Racing in 2023, quickly becoming a fan favourite alongside teammate Kai Allen, turning into an exciting duo by 2025. His recent victory at the prestigious Bathurst 1000 has only boosted his profile. Although Payne is officially contracted with Grove Racing until the end of 2027, his reluctance to confirm a long-term commitment has fueled speculation about his next steps.

There are indications that Team 18, affiliated with General Motors, is interested in Payne, but he remained coy when questioned about ongoing discussions. “I can’t really shed too much light on it at the moment,” he stated on Motorsport 360, emphasising his current focus on racing the Ford Mustang with Penrite Racing. He affirmed the importance of aiming for a championship title.

Team 18 is actively pursuing prominent Supercars figures, recently securing Craig Lowndes for a two-year contract after Triple Eight’s switch to Ford for the 2026 season. If Payne does transition to Team 18, he could command a substantial contract, especially given his status as the reigning Bathurst 1000 champion.

His accomplishments also include the distinguished Great Race win, the Jason Richards Trophy, and the Enduro Cup in 2025, highlighting his growing reputation within the racing community. Teammate Kai Allen has spoken highly of Payne, recognising his talent and collaboration within the team.

The long-standing legacy of General Motors in motorsport, representing brands like Chevrolet and Buick, presents an enticing international prospect for Payne. With Supercars recently announcing a lucrative partnership with the Foxtel Group worth $50 million over four years, the sport appears to be entering a dynamic phase.

Payne’s participation in the upcoming New Zealand double-header is expected to enhance his visibility, potentially positioning him for a groundbreaking contract if he opts for a change of teams. The Supercars series is set to race in Taupo and subsequently in Christchurch from April 17-19, which will further amplify his profile in the competitive landscape.
