Glen Jakovich, a former champion of the West Coast Eagles, has voiced strong criticism of the club’s board, attributing their current dire situation to poor management. This season, the Eagles have secured only one victory, and if they fail to win any of their remaining three matches, they will set a new record for the most losses in VFL/AFL history. This would place them in a dubious category alongside the GWS Giants, who managed just one win in their second season in 2013.
Since the beginning of the 2022 season, the Eagles have achieved a mere 11 wins, already clinching this year’s wooden spoon. Jakovich argues that the board’s complacency following the 2018 premiership has led to their downfall, as they hesitated to make crucial decisions, particularly regarding the sacking of coach Adam Simpson. “Their handling of Adam Simpson was a disaster,” Jakovich stated during an interview, pointing out that the board’s indecisiveness following a significant loss to Fremantle highlighted their dysfunctionality.
Jakovich reflected on the Eagles’ previous dominance in the 2000s and 2010s, lamenting their recent invisibility in the league, stating, “They’re irrelevant on the eastern seaboard. Nobody talks about them anymore.” He described the current state of the club as a “basket case,” emphasising their struggles particularly at home games. The veteran player underscored the need for accountability, calling on the board to communicate openly and own up to their mismanagement.
Furthermore, Jakovich expressed concerns about the potential loss of captain Oscar Allen, who is rumoured to be considering a move to Brisbane during the off-season. He believes the problems facing the club are deeply rooted, stemming from decisions made over the last few years.
As a two-time premiership player with the Eagles, Jakovich’s insights are particularly poignant; he won four club best and fairest awards during his tenure from 1991 to 2004. His call for greater transparency reflects a desire not only for improvement within the club but also for a renewed connection with its fanbase.
