Gold Coast Titans coach Des Hasler has firmly dismissed speculation regarding his departure from the club, asserting his commitment to leading the team through to 2026. Recently, reports surfaced suggesting that Hasler might leave a year early, paving the way for the Titans’ sixth head coach since 2014. Allegations also indicated that Hasler’s contract contains clauses allowing him to resign if the Titans are no longer mathematically in the finals race this season.
Currently positioned at the bottom of the NRL ladder, the Titans remain within striking distance of the finals, needing only four wins—and a better points differential—to reach the eighth spot with eight rounds left in the season. Following their recent 26-14 defeat to Brisbane, Hasler was questioned about his intentions for the next season, to which he confidently replied, “Of course, yep.” He added that he disregards the negative reports and believes in the team’s potential, stating, “The speculation is unfounded.”
Hasler acknowledged the difficulties faced over the past 18 months but remains passionate about his role. He believes in the team’s progress and observed positive indicators during their recent performances. The captain of the Titans, Tino Fa’asuamaleaui, echoed Hasler’s sentiments, affirming the players’ unwavering support for their coach regardless of the current circumstances. He emphasised their commitment to play for Hasler each week.
Historically, the Titans have struggled, failing to secure a higher finish than eighth since 2010 and participating in just one finals match over the past nine years. The team has faced persistent injury challenges this season, suffering five losses in their last six games, interspersed with two bye rounds. Despite these challenges, Hasler praised his players for their effort and determination, highlighting that with better execution and fewer mistakes, there is a strong foundation for the team’s future.
Looking ahead, the Titans are set to face the Tigers next Sunday, with Hasler hopeful that improvement will lead to better outcomes. He remains optimistic about the potential of the Titans and is focused on turning their fortunes around.
