Jimmy Bartel has endorsed the idea of establishing a dedicated mental health round in the AFL calendar, following the tragic passing of Adam Selwood, a revered West Coast Eagles player. Selwood, who was just 41, died only three months after his identical twin brother, Troy, took his own life. The football community responded with an outpouring of tributes, including a minute’s silence and black armbands during matches to honour the Selwood family.

The recent death of Selwood has intensified calls for the AFL to incorporate a mental health round to highlight the importance of mental wellbeing. Currently, the AFL features Spud’s Game, a tribute match designed to honour the late Danny ‘Spud’ Frawley, which raises awareness and funds for mental health issues. Bartel suggested that the scope of Spud’s Game could expand to encompass a broader series of matches dedicated to this cause.

"In Australia, we have a tremendous platform to challenge the stereotype that men should hide their emotions," Bartel remarked on Nine’s Today. He expressed the need for open conversations about mental health, urging individuals to reach out for support: “A problem shared is a problem halved.”

Bartel also praised West Coast captain Oscar Allen for his poignant comments after a recent match, where Allen noted the loss of a club legend and his personal struggles with mental health this year. He emphasised the importance of support networks in overcoming such challenges and encouraged others facing difficulties to connect with helplines or friends.

Reflecting on the impact of Selwood’s death, Bartel acknowledged the emotional toll it has taken not only on the West Coast club but across the entire AFL community. He mentioned the tragic loss of both Selwood brothers within a short span, highlighting it as a significant issue affecting many lives beyond the football industry. Bartel hopes for this tragedy to spark broader conversations about mental health, helping to dismantle the associated stigma.

As the conversation continues, the focus remains on supporting those who are struggling, reinforcing the message of collective care and empathy. The football community stands united in sending heartfelt condolences to the Selwood family during this indescribably difficult time.
