Erik de Haart, a courageous survivor of the 2002 Bali bombings, has passed away unexpectedly. Wayne Hack, president of the Coogee Dolphins Rugby Club, expressed profound sadness at de Haart’s sudden death, highlighting his commitment as a life member and sponsor of the club. De Haart is fondly remembered for his heroic actions immediately following the tragedy, where he risked his life to assist others in peril.
On October 12, 2002, while in Bali with his teammates, de Haart was at the infamous Sari Club when two bombs exploded, resulting in the deaths of 202 people, including 88 Australians. Despite losing six friends in the attack, de Haart bravely attempted to rescue others trapped amidst the devastation, an ordeal he often reflected upon with deep remorse. He recounted hearing cries for help from victims under debris and faced an agonising choice to either risk his own life for theirs or escape the flames.
De Haart’s bravery was marked by his refusal to label himself a hero, haunted by the memory of those he could not save. The Coogee Dolphins extend their heartfelt condolences to his family and friends during this difficult time.
