Two backpackers were spotted swimming in Byron Bay despite severe weather warnings linked to ex-cyclone Alfred. This morning, as wild ocean conditions whipped up the beach, the duo braved the treacherous waters, defying advice to remain out of the ocean.
Their risky swim quickly turned perilous, as they were swept approximately 300 metres down the beach, prompting concerned onlookers to alert NSW Police. The Westpac rescue helicopter was also placed on standby to assist in case of emergency.
After surfacing safely, one of the backpackers remarked to 9News that he had merely intended to “swim a little bit.” Subsequently, both men were engaged by NSW Police for questioning regarding their choice to enter the dangerous waters.
Authorities have reiterated the importance of safety during such weather events. A spokesperson for Gold Coast City urged the public to stay clear of coastal areas, stating, “Although the large waves may be exciting to witness, we need everyone to stay well away from coastal areas for your own safety. No photograph or video is worth your life.”
The incident highlights the unpredictability of ocean conditions during severe weather, even as people flock to tourist hotspots to observe the dramatic sea display.
