Melbourne residents can now return to the beach after recent storms, with a couple of exceptions. The Environment Protection Authority’s Beach Report, released at 10am, indicates that 10 beaches around Port Philip Bay have been rated as “good” for water quality, while 24 are considered “fair”. However, Seaford and Sorrento beaches remain unsuitable for swimming due to “poor” water quality following the storms.

While most beaches are accessible, water quality in the Yarra River is consistently poor, and there are warnings against contact with Moonee Ponds Creek due to an oil-like substance observed there. This news is a welcome relief for Melburnians enduring a heatwave amid unsafe beach conditions.

The EPA typically advises against swimming for 48 hours after rainfall, particularly noting that children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems are especially vulnerable to sickness from contaminated water. Those who feel unwell after swimming are encouraged to consult a doctor.

Residents can check the latest beach conditions online, with the next water quality update scheduled for 3pm AEDT.
