Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly shaping the Australian workforce, presenting opportunities rather than challenges, according to a leader in education and skills training. Craig McFarlane, Vice President of Pearson Enterprise Learning and Skills Asia Pacific, highlighted the role of AI in revolutionising work processes, emphasizing that staying informed about AI is crucial.

Research carried out by Pearson’s AI division, Faethm, indicates that a mere three technologies—robotic process automation, basic chatbots, and large-language model (LLM) chatbots—are responsible for 80% of AI’s workforce impact. The study also predicts that sectors such as professional, scientific, and technical services; financial and insurance services; health and social care; and manufacturing will witness the most significant changes due to AI over the next three years.

McFarlane urged individuals and organisations to recognise the evolving landscape rather than ignore it. He warned against the “head-in-the-sand” attitude that can stifle progress. Addressing skills gaps that might arise as certain roles become redundant is vital, as is understanding the new competencies that will be necessary in an AI-heavy workplace.

Rather than simply fearing job losses, McFarlane encouraged embracing AI’s potential for boosting productivity and creating new opportunities. He recalled previous technological advancements, like the introduction of Excel, which many believed would threaten the accounting profession; instead, the industry evolved and flourished.

As AI integration deepens, workers can expect their roles to change significantly. McFarlane estimates that in his own experience, AI-driven tools have already saved him substantial time in tasks like sorting through emails, suggesting that many traditional administrative functions could be streamlined or automated.

For those entering the workforce, McFarlane stated that preparation needs to adapt to these shifts. He advocates for a proactive approach where young people actively explore and experiment with AI technologies, fostering an environment of continuous learning and adaptation.

In conclusion, while the rise of AI may implicate shifts in job roles and required skills, it also opens avenues for innovation and efficiency across various industries in Australia. Embracing this change will be essential for future workplace success.
