In central Pennsylvania, the theft of around 100,000 eggs valued at roughly $54,000 from Pete & Gerry’s Organics is currently being investigated by authorities. This incident occurred on a Saturday night and comes at a time when egg shortages are pressing due to an avian flu outbreak that has significantly impacted production, with prices escalating to nearly record levels.
Recent reports indicate that the company is collaborating with local police to resolve the theft, emphasising their commitment to the investigation. The avian flu has posed substantial challenges to the egg industry, resulting in the loss of millions of egg-laying hens, with a notable spike in deaths occurring towards the end of last year.
As a consequence, average egg prices have soared; for instance, in December, the price for a dozen large, grade-A eggs was recorded at $6.60, a significant increase from the previous month. This situation has led to various establishments, including Waffle House, imposing surcharges on egg dishes to manage rising costs. The restaurant plans to revise this charge based on market fluctuations. Consumers and businesses alike continue to feel the strain of these elevated prices and constrained supply.
