Australians are urged to “reconsider” travelling to Pakistan following recent missile strikes by India into Pakistani-controlled regions. Early this morning, Indian missiles reportedly impacted five sites, including Ahmadpur East and Muridke in Punjab, as well as several locations in Pakistan-administered Kashmir. Initial reports indicated one fatality, but this has tragically risen to eight, with several others injured.
In light of the escalating tensions, Indian airlines have commenced cancellations of flights to major destinations in northern India, such as Srinagar, Dharamshala, Leh, Jammu, and Amritsar, with airports in these areas closed “until further notice.” The Smartraveller website, managed by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), has elevated its travel advice for Pakistan, now advising Australians to exercise a high degree of caution in India as well.
Reports indicate that the Wagah border crossing has been temporarily closed, halting cross-border travel between India and Pakistan. Consequently, travellers are advised to reconsider their itineraries if they plan to travel to India from Pakistan. Warnings remain in effect for various parts of Pakistan, specifically Balochistan, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, and areas adjacent to the Afghanistan and India borders.
For those already in India, it is essential to stay updated through local media and adhere to the directives from local authorities. Advisories suggest monitoring for potential flight disruptions, as airport closures may occur without prior notice. Overall, safety remains the paramount concern amidst the current volatile security situation in the region.
