Australians are set to enjoy a more streamlined travel experience to the United States with the introduction of a new membership program tailored for eligible citizens. This initiative comes as Australia has recently been named one of 19 global entry partners for the US, despite ongoing trade tensions.

The voluntary global entry membership allows Australian travellers to benefit from expedited customs and immigration processing upon arrival in the US. Additionally, they will have access to the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) pre-check programme, which aims to reduce waiting times at airports. Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke emphasised the advantages for business travellers, noting that it will allow them to focus on building connections rather than queuing.

Eligible Australians can apply for the membership if they have been pre-vetted as low-risk by both Australian and US authorities. Once granted, the membership lasts for five years, albeit with mandatory annual background checks to ensure continued eligibility.

Initially, only a limited number of Australians could apply for the programme earlier this year, but recent amendments to federal legislation have expanded access to all Australian citizens, with the second phase of roll-out commencing in July.

Foreign Affairs Minister Penny Wong described the programme’s expansion as reflective of the strong relationship between Australia and the US, despite the recent decision by the US to impose tariffs on Australian steel and aluminium. She credited the successful inclusion of Australia in the programme to the efforts of Ambassador Kevin Rudd.

This development is welcomed by US Customs and Border Protection officials, who highlight the significance of facilitating safe and efficient travel between both countries, especially with over a million passengers entering the US each day.

Other partner countries in the global entry programme include Argentina, Japan, Germany, and the United Kingdom, among others, reinforcing a collaborative commitment to enhancing international travel efficiency.
