Australian tourists are being advised to reconsider plans to visit sections of Thailand and Cambodia due to escalating military conflicts along the border between the two nations. Continuous fighting is reported in multiple areas, leading to widespread evacuations of Thai villagers as clashes intensified in the morning.

In response to the deteriorating situation, the Australian Government’s Smartraveller program has recommended that Australians avoid the Cambodian border provinces of Preah Vihear and Oddar Meanchey, as well as the adjacent Thai provinces, which encompass Buriram, Si Saket, Surin, and Ubon Ratchathani. While the warnings do not extend to the popular tourist destination of Siem Reap, known for its iconic temples like Angkor Wat, visitors should be cautious of nearby landmarks such as Preah Vihear, Ta Krabei, and Ta Moan, where risks are heightened due to reported military actions.

Smartraveller highlighted increasing armed conflict, marked by military strikes, violence, and the use of landmines in border regions. Tourists are urged to follow local authority guidance, stay updated via local news, and remain vigilant regarding their personal safety.

Compounding the crisis, Thailand has closed all land border crossings and is advising its residents to leave Cambodia promptly. Tensions escalated notably after a mine explosion injured five Thai soldiers, leading to heightened military responses and diplomatic strains, including the withdrawal of ambassadors from both countries.

Although disputes and skirmishes have long characterised relations along the 800-kilometre border, the conflict has sharply escalated following a confrontation in May that resulted in a soldier’s death. Recent clashes have exhibited a scale and intensity that surpasses usual occurrences, prompting serious concerns for those traveling in the vicinity.

In light of these developments, potential travellers should prioritise their safety and stay informed about the evolving situation.
