Adelaide – Excitement is in the air as Bronte Campbell, an illustrious figure in Australian swimming, observes the promising emergence of new talent at the Australian trials this week. Over the initial two days, three young athletes earned their places on the senior Dolphins team, poised for the upcoming world championships in Singapore.
On Tuesday evening, 16-year-old Sienna Toohey made headlines by qualifying for her first senior Dolphins team, stepping into the spotlight as an Albury prodigy. In the past year, she has shattered two junior national records previously held by great Leisel Jones. Additionally, 20-year-old Jesse Coleman secured his spot with a qualification in the men’s 100m butterfly, while 22-year-old Charlie Hawke will also represent Australia as a relay swimmer in the men’s 200m freestyle.
Reflecting on these fresh faces, Campbell expressed her joy, stating, "It is so exciting to see new people making the team." She highlighted the significance of this achievement for young swimmers, noting the sheer joy they experience when fulfilling such a significant goal. Campbell, who is currently taking a break from competition, appreciates the energy and promise these rookies bring to the sport.
As Sienna, Jesse, and Charlie prepare to compete in Singapore, their races will be broadcast live by Nine, which recently secured exclusive rights to the event. Toohey has already qualified for both the women’s 100m and 50m breaststroke, with potential plans to enter the 200m event as well. Coleman and Hawke will also take to the pool in their respective events, alongside other emerging swimmers like Edward Sommerville, Olivia Wunsch, and Milla Jansen, part of an impressive wave of talent following the retirement of renowned athletes such as Emma McKeon and Cate Campbell.
Bronte recalls the importance of a long-term view in athletic development. "With age comes perspective; it can feel like your career hinges on one meet," she stated. Campbell stresses that embracing each experience as a learning opportunity is vital, especially for those competing on the international stage for the first time.
In conjunction with the trials, Bronte and her sister Cate are creating a daily show, Campbells’ Condensed, featured on Swimming Australia’s social media platforms, capturing the excitement surrounding the trials and the upcoming championships.
The Singapore world championships will run from July 28 to August 3, offering these promising young athletes a chance to showcase their talents on the global stage while building their careers in swimming.
