An Australian man has tragically lost his life while volunteering in Ukraine for the charity organisation, Prevail Together. Reports indicate he was killed alongside a colleague as they attempted to deactivate an explosive device in the town of Izyum.

Prevail Together is a US-registered charity focused on the disposal of landmines and other explosives, facilitating the safe return of civilians to their homes while also providing medical and humanitarian assistance.

In response to the incident, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese expressed his heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased volunteer. The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade has confirmed it is offering consular support to his family at this difficult time.

Shaun Pinner, a board member of Prevail Together, stated that Chris “Swampy” Garrett, co-founder of the organisation and an experienced British bomb disposal expert, also lost his life in the incident. A third individual sustained injuries from the explosion. Pinner shared on social media that, unfortunately, two of the three critically injured individuals have now been confirmed deceased.

Chris Garrett had dedicated over a decade of his life to landmine clearance. According to a fundraising page set up in his memory, he lost his life while carrying out the crucial work of disabling an explosive device.

Pinner noted Garrett’s remarkable contribution to the field, recalling the numerous lives he had saved through his efforts in de-mining. Prevail Together prides itself on a team composed of seasoned professionals from both military and humanitarian backgrounds, showcasing its commitment to making a difference.

This devastating incident highlights the ongoing risks faced by humanitarian workers in conflict zones, as they strive to protect civilians and restore safety in heavily affected areas.
