Australian engineer Robert Pether has been granted bail after enduring over four years of detention in Iraq under what has been deemed arbitrary circumstances. Pether and a colleague were arrested on fraud charges on April 7, 2021, amid a contractual conflict involving their employer, CME Consulting, and the Central Bank of Iraq. Following his arrest, Pether was handed a five-year prison sentence along with a hefty fine of $16 million.

The United Nations working group recognised Pether’s detention as arbitrary, highlighting the absence of a fair trial and due process. During his time in prison, Pether has maintained his innocence, alleging that he was coerced into signing a pre-prepared confession in Arabic.

With his recent release on bail, Pether remains subject to ongoing legal proceedings in Iraq. Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong expressed relief at this development, noting the toll Pether’s detention has taken on him and his family. Wong praised the consistent advocacy from the Australian government, mentioning that officials engaged with Iraqi authorities over 200 times regarding his case. She acknowledged the dedication of the officials involved, including a special envoy who negotiated for Pether’s release.

Irish Deputy Prime Minister Simon Harris also announced the news of Pether’s bail, highlighting that he remains in Iraq for the moment, yet this advancement is seen as a hopeful step towards reuniting him with his family in Roscommon, Ireland. Harris conveyed his discussions with Pether’s wife about the situation, indicating a collective optimism for future developments.

While awaiting the outcomes of his legal matters, both the Australian and Irish governments continue to support Pether and his family, advocating for his welfare and interests. Wong expressed concern for Pether’s health and the lingering charges but expressed hope for a resolution.

In a poignant letter from his prison cell, Pether shared the anguish of missing vital family milestones, noting how much he has longed to return to his loved ones and Australia. He reflected on significant events he has missed, including three Christmases, multiple birthdays, and major anniversaries—underlining the personal cost of his four-year ordeal. Pether’s heartfelt wish is to return home, to the familiar comforts of Australia, where he could enjoy simple pleasures such as watching the harbour and spending time with his family.
