Australia has selected the 17-year-old Waiaria Ellis to join the Wallaroos for their upcoming Test match against world champions New Zealand this Saturday in Wellington. With her debut, Ellis will become the second youngest player in Wallaroos history, just shy of the record held by her teammate Caitlyn Halse.

Ellis, who stands at 160cm and weighs 55kg, is known for her exceptional footwork and agility. She is made the transition from gymnastics and comes from a family with a strong sporting background; her father, Ben Ellis, played rugby league and her sister, Ruby-Jean Kennard-Ellis, is a prop for the Parramatta NRLW team.

Coaching staff have expressed confidence in Ellis’s abilities following her development through training camps, including participation in last year’s WXV event in South Africa. Australia’s coach, Jo Yapp, praised Ellis’s skills and positive impact on the team dynamic. Alongside her debut, the Wallaroos will welcome back several key players, such as Piper Duck and Lydia Kavoa, ahead of what promises to be a challenging encounter against the Black Ferns.

Historically, the Wallaroos have faced difficulties against New Zealand, having yet to secure a victory in 29 encounters. The current team lineup features a mix of youth and experience, demonstrating Australia’s commitment to strengthening their performance as they prepare for the 2025 Rugby World Cup.
