George Bailey, the chairman of Australia’s selectors, has dismissed concerns regarding Cameron Green’s injury management, stating that the situation has been “blown out of proportion.” This follows comments made by Kolkata Knight Riders’ captain, Ajinkya Rahane, after Green’s debut match in the IPL, where he scored 18 runs in a defeat to the Mumbai Indians.

In the match, the Knights posted a solid score of 4-220, only to lose, with the Indians achieving a record chase. Following the loss, queries about Kolkata’s bowling strategies emerged, particularly regarding why Green wasn’t utilised more. In response, Rahane suggested that fans should direct such questions to Cricket Australia (CA), which led to an awkward moment during the post-match interview.

CA later clarified that Green is dealing with a lower back injury, which was detected after the T20 World Cup last month. A spokesperson confirmed that Kolkata was fully informed about his condition. Bailey explained that Green’s situation involves regular check-ins, and while an issue was noted, it was minor enough to require only a brief period of reduced activity.

Bailey indicated that the concerns intensified following Rahane’s brief comments. He supported the idea that Kolkata was well aware of Green’s status. He expects Green to return to full bowling soon, emphasizing that his absence may have impacted the team balance. Rahane acknowledged that once Green is able to bowl, it will allow for better adjustment in the team’s dynamics.

Green’s move to the IPL was significant; he was acquired by Kolkata for a record 252 million rupees (approximately $4.17 million AUD), becoming the most expensive international player in the competition’s history. Rahane expressed a desire for Green to fit into the bowling lineup quickly, stating that the current mix needs improvement, especially in bowling depth.

Since undergoing back surgery last year, Green’s participation in matches has been limited. He was unable to bowl during the World Test Championship final against South Africa and had minuscule bowling contributions in recent Test series against the West Indies. His role in the Ashes was also curtailed, and he bowled less than 62 overs across five matches.

Green’s recent performances have included a crucial century against NSW, although he faced scrutiny regarding his form, illustrated by an awkward encounter with a journalist at Cricket Central. Overall, the focus remains on Green’s recovery and his impending return to full fitness, which is crucial for both his IPL team and the Australian national side moving forward.
