Australia has aligned itself with Germany, Italy, New Zealand, and the UK to denounce Israel’s Security Cabinet’s strategy to seize Gaza City. Foreign Minister Penny Wong’s office released a statement expressing strong disapproval, indicating that such actions could breach international human rights laws. The nations warned that this decision would exacerbate the already dire humanitarian crisis, threaten the lives of hostages, and potentially lead to mass civilian displacement.

The statement also highlighted the risks of inflicting further violations of international humanitarian law, asserting that any attempts at annexation or the extension of settlements are against international regulations. It urged for an immediate and lasting ceasefire, especially amidst warnings of a looming famine in Gaza, and called upon Hamas to free the remaining hostages.

The countries reaffirmed their commitment to a negotiated two-state solution, which they believe is the only viable path to ensuring co-existence in peace, security, and dignity for both Israelis and Palestinians. In the lead-up to the Security Cabinet meeting, Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu emphasised plans to regain control over Gaza before transferring authority to cooperative Arab forces opposed to Hamas.

However, Israeli military leadership has expressed concerns that such plans could jeopardise the well-being of roughly 20 hostages still believed to be held by Hamas, as well as further strain Israel’s armed forces following two years of regional conflicts.

Israel has carried out extensive bombardments and raids in Gaza City, only to find militants regrouping repeatedly. A large-scale ground offensive could displace tens of thousands and severely hamper humanitarian aid efforts redirected towards the area.

Currently, the number of residents in Gaza City is uncertain, particularly since many fled due to evacuation orders during the early stages of the conflict but returned amid a ceasefire earlier in the year. The ongoing tensions and military actions have led to a highly unstable situation for both civilians and military personnel on all sides, highlighting the urgent need for a resolution to the persistent hostilities.
