Aussies Driven to Rely on Savings as Mortgage Costs Surge by $17.7 Billion

Recent data from Canstar highlights a concerning trend for Australians as mortgage rates soar to unprecedented levels, prompting many to tap into their savings. The lending environment has seen a substantial increase, with mortgages rising by $17.7 billion in June following two interest rate reductions earlier this year.

Sally Tindall from Canstar remarked, “The residential mortgage sector experienced a surge in June fostered by the interest rate cuts in February and May.” This uptick in mortgage lending coincides with a consistent rise in property prices across the nation.

However, this surge has had consequences for household savings. In June, deposits fell by 0.74%, marking the first decline in a year and the most significant drop in over two years. This decline in savings is attributed to the seasonal spending that occurs as Australians navigate end-of-financial-year costs.

Despite this dip in savings, Tindall noted that it is typical for this period, as consumers often increase their expenditures during this time. She added, “While household savings took a blow in June, we anticipate this trend will be short-lived, even amid ongoing cost-of-living pressures, as Australians continue to strive towards building their financial reserves.”

Furthermore, data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics indicates that inflation has reached its lowest levels since the pandemic, paving the way for another likely rate cut when the Reserve Bank convenes next on August 12. The current economic landscape thus paints a complex picture of challenges and potential financial relief for Australian homeowners and consumers alike.
