Australian music icon Col Joye has passed away at the age of 89, marking the end of a remarkable career that began in the late 1950s and spanned nearly seven decades. Born Colin Frederick Jacobsen, he became a key figure in the Australian rock and roll movement and is celebrated for being the first Australian rock artist to achieve a number one hit nationwide with his song “Oh Yeah Uh Huh”.

Joye’s influence on the music scene extended beyond his chart success. He was a familiar face on the popular television program Bandstand, which premiered in 1958. During the 1960s, he made significant contributions to morale, touring Vietnam to entertain Australian soldiers during the war.

In recognition of his impact on music, Joye was inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame in 1988, highlighting his dedication to Australian culture. Beyond his musical achievements, he also founded ATA Studios in Sydney, further cementing his legacy in the industry.

Despite facing considerable health challenges after a severe fall in 1990 that left him in a coma, Joye demonstrated remarkable resilience and made a full recovery. His passing leaves a void in the Australian music landscape, where he will be remembered as a pioneer and a beloved entertainer.
