Australian travellers are facing potential disruptions as two cyclones approach the Pacific region, notably Severe Tropical Cyclone Vaianu, currently a category 3 storm threatening to pass near Nadi, a popular tourist area in Fiji. The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) has issued warnings for travellers to remain vigilant, as parts of Fiji could experience damaging winds, heavy rainfall, and flash flooding.

The travel advisory emphasises the importance of being aware of evacuation procedures in accommodation, as well as the need to locate nearby shelters should a cyclone approach. Travellers are encouraged to contact their airlines or travel providers for updates regarding potential disruptions to their plans.

Cyclone Vaianu is anticipated to pass to the east of Vanuatu, another destination frequented by Australians, without making landfall in either location. However, it poses a risk to New Zealand, particularly Auckland, as it approaches over the weekend. Fiji is currently in its cyclone season, which runs from November to April, having faced devastating storms in recent years, including Cyclone Winston in 2016, which resulted in 44 fatalities, and multiple cyclones in 2021 that caused substantial damage.

In addition, Cyclone Maila, also a category 3 storm, is monitoring off the coast of the Solomon Islands with the possibility of impacting Papua New Guinea or even reaching Australia’s Far North Queensland coast by the weekend. Experts indicate that the strength of Cyclone Maila upon crossing into Australia remains uncertain at this time.

Travellers are advised to remain updated on the weather situation and heed local authorities’ instructions to ensure their safety during these hazardous weather events.
