Aussie Drivers Cautioned About Costly EV ‘Lesson’ as Fuel Crisis Boosts Demand

As fuel prices reach unprecedented heights, more Australians are considering the switch to electric vehicles (EVs). However, prospective buyers should first be aware of a crucial aspect: insurance premiums for EVs are typically higher than those for conventional petrol or diesel cars. According to research from Compare the Market, over the past year, the cost of insuring a selection of 10 full electric models has surged by an average of 10%. In contrast, hybrid vehicles have seen a relatively smaller increase at 6%.

Several factors contribute to the rising insurance costs for EVs. Insurance companies are traditionally cautious and tend to raise premiums for newer technologies until they can fully assess and understand the associated risks. The advanced technology in electric cars often necessitates a more complex repair process, compounded by a less developed network of trained repair specialists. As a result, insurers are increasing prices to offset this uncertainty.

A significant disparity in premiums is evident; for instance, the insurance quote for a BMW electric vehicle can vary by as much as $3,315 between different insurers, even for similar coverage profiles. Comparatively, traditionally fuelled vehicles do not face the same steep insurance hikes.

Despite the generally higher costs associated with EV insurance, there are more affordable options available that can bring expenses closer to those of traditional vehicles. As approximately 54% of Australian drivers express interest in obtaining EVs, driven by rising fuel costs and lending rates, it’s essential that consumers shop around for the best insurance deals.

Ultimately, while the average EV insurance rates may appear steep, savvy consumers can still find competitive rates that bridge the gap with conventional vehicles.
