Jai Opetaia (28-0) is set to defend his IBF cruiserweight title against unbeaten German challenger Huseyin Cinkara (23-0) on the Gold Coast on Saturday, December 6. While plans were being discussed for Opetaia to unify titles against Mexico’s Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez, the latter is currently injured, with a possible match projected for mid-2024.

Opetaia’s immediate focus is on Cinkara, who has become the mandatory challenger for the title. Cinkara, 40, has a record of 19 knockouts out of his 23 victories, showcasing his knockout power. In contrast, Opetaia boasts an impressive undefeated record on the Gold Coast, where he has successfully defended his titles in two previous bouts, each concluding with knockout finishes.

Prior reports indicated that Opetaia might explore the option of paying step-aside fees to Cinkara in order to face former world champion Chris Billam-Smith instead. However, a deal with Cinkara was clinched just before a scheduled purse bid. Opetaia expressed confidence in his preparation, stating, “Cinkara is unbeaten and dangerous, but this is my time. I’ve been calling for unifications, but the other champions don’t seem to want it. First, I have to take care of Cinkara—and then we keep chasing those belts.”

If Opetaia successfully retains his title against Cinkara, it could pave the way for a matchup with WBC champion Badou Jack in early 2026, followed by a potential fight with Ramirez. This highlights the importance of the upcoming bout, not only for Opetaia’s title reign but also for his aspirations of unifying the cruiserweight division.

Touted as Australia’s premier boxer, Opetaia has drawn attention from fans and promoters alike. Mick Francis, the director of Tasman Fighters, stated, “Jai Opetaia is the best boxer in Australia and the number one cruiserweight in the world. His star keeps rising, and bringing this fight to Australia shows just how big he’s become. Fans can expect fireworks.”

In the co-main event, fellow Australian boxer Justis Huni is anticipated to return to the ring after suffering a tenth-round defeat in June against Fabio Wardley for the interim WBA heavyweight title. The details of Huni’s opponent for his return are yet to be finalised.

With high stakes and the potential for title unification looming, the December 6 showdown is expected to deliver an electrifying night of boxing on the Gold Coast.
