At least 18 people have lost their lives and over 120 others are injured following a roof collapse at a nightclub in the Dominican Republic’s capital, Santo Domingo, early Tuesday morning. Rescue crews are actively searching through the debris for potential survivors, encouraged by the belief that many may still be trapped beneath the rubble. The Director of the Centre of Emergency Operations, Juan Manuel Méndez, assured that authorities are dedicated to the rescue efforts until every individual is accounted for.

Among the victims is Nelsy Cruz, the governor of Montecristi, and injured parties include well-known merengue musician Rubby Pérez, who was performing at the time of the incident. Pérez’s manager, Enrique Paulino, recounted the chaotic moments when the roof gave way, explaining he initially mistook the collapse for an earthquake as he dove for safety in the corner of the venue. Tragically, the collapse claimed the life of the group’s saxophonist.

President Luis Abinader has expressed condolences on social media, stating that all rescue teams are tirelessly working to assist those affected by this tragedy. He visited the scene to offer support, embracing individuals desperately searching for friends and family members, visibly moved by the desperate situation. An official outside the nightclub urged the large crowd to provide space for ambulances and cooperate with rescue efforts, as names of survivors were read aloud at hospitals to anxious relatives seeking news.

Currently, the cause of the roof collapse remains unknown, and investigations are likely to proceed as authorities continue their efforts to manage the aftermath of this devastating occurrence.
