On 10 May 1985, the Go-Go’s, widely regarded as the most successful all-female rock band, announced their breakup. The band was established in 1978, drawing inspiration from the vibrant underground punk scene of Los Angeles. They made history with their debut album, Beauty and the Beat, released in 1981; it became the first album by an all-female band to reach number one on the US charts.
