Arsenal is on the verge of signing highly sought-after Swedish striker Viktor Gyokeres as they aim to transform from almost champions to actual trophy holders. Reports suggest that the Gunners have come to a verbal agreement with Sporting Lisbon for a five-year contract valued at approximately $114 million, inclusive of $18 million in performance-based add-ons. Last season, the 27-year-old showcased an impressive performance, netting 54 goals in 52 matches for Sporting, making him a prime target across Europe.
Despite playing some attractive football last season, Arsenal concluded the campaign without any silverware, finishing as runners-up in the Premier League but trailing behind eventual champions Liverpool, who scored 17 more goals. Kai Havertz was Arsenal’s top goalscorer in the league with just nine goals, which raised concerns about their goal-scoring capacity.
Stan Sport commentator Mark Pougatch highlighted the disparity in scoring between Arsenal and other teams like Brentford, which had three players hitting double figures in goals. He emphasised the challenge that lies ahead for Arsenal if they wish to compete effectively for both the Premier League and Champions League titles, stating, “they just don’t have enough goals for all their good work in the middle of the field.”
It’s been nearly five years since Arsenal last celebrated a significant victory, having lifted the FA Cup during Mikel Arteta’s inaugural season. In addition to Gyokeres, Arteta has strengthened the squad by acquiring midfielders Martin Zubimendi and Christian Norgaard from Real Sociedad and Brentford, respectively, along with goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga and winger Noni Madueke from rivals Chelsea.
As the new Premier League season approaches, commencing on August 16 (AEST) with a match between Liverpool and Bournemouth, Arsenal will kick off their campaign with an exciting fixture against Manchester United on August 18 (AEST).
