A 21-year-old man from Werribee is set to be interrogated by police after being arrested by the Victorian Joint Counter Terrorism team. He is believed to be one of three individuals involved in the arson that took place at the Ripponlea Synagogue on December 6, leaving the building severely damaged and shocking the local Jewish community.
The police will allege that the man is linked to the fire and could face serious charges, including arson, risks to life, and motor vehicle theft. Authorities are also anticipating further arrests in connection with the incident. In conjunction with the arrest, detectives executed seven search warrants across various locations, including Point Cook and Toorak, where they seized several items, such as electronic devices.
On a related note, another individual was charged on July 16 for allegedly stealing a vehicle believed to have been used to reach the synagogue during the fire. The charges of arson carry a potential sentence of up to 15 years, while the theft and endangerment offenses both carry a maximum of 10 years.
Victoria Police Deputy Commissioner Wendy Steendam highlighted the vital role that public assistance has played in the investigation. She encouraged anyone with information about the incident or those involved to come forward, as even minor details could greatly aid the investigation.
The Australian Federal Police’s Deputy Commissioner for National Security, Krissy Barrett, categorised the incident as a politically motivated crime. She affirmed that the agencies involved are prioritising this case, denouncing the act as both abhorrent and dangerous, demonstrating a broader pattern of targeting against the community. The investigation aims not only to bring the perpetrators to justice but also to reassure the public that such actions will not go unpunished.
Community members with any relevant information are urged to contact authorities to assist in the investigation.
