The search for Dezi Freeman, wanted for the ambush killing of two police officers in Victoria, has entered its seventh day. The police have deployed Bulletproof Bearcat armoured vehicles into Mount Buffalo National Park as they continue their efforts to locate the suspect, who has been on the run since the violent incident on August 26. At that time, Freeman allegedly opened fire while authorities attempted to execute a search warrant linked to historical child sex offence allegations.

The tragedy claimed the lives of Detective Leading Senior Constable Neal Thompson and Senior Constable Vadim De Waart, with a third officer sustaining serious injuries. Authorities have warned that Freeman remains armed and possesses survival skills, prompting increased concern for public safety.

In a plea for her husband’s safe surrender, Amalia Freeman released a statement through a lawyer, urging him to turn himself in. She expressed her cooperation with the police and sorrow over the deaths of the officers, stating that she and her children do not hold anti-authority beliefs. She further called upon anyone who may be assisting Freeman to inform the police immediately.

Freeman’s nephew remarked on his affinity for Mount Buffalo, describing it as a “holy place” for his uncle, who expressed a desire to be buried there. Meanwhile, a local figure, Stephen Mallett, who has connections to the area, was charged with weapons and drug crimes but denies knowing Freeman.

The situation remains tense as the authorities maintain their extensive search efforts in the national park for Freeman, who is also known by the name Desmond Filby. The police have not confirmed any sightings since the ambush, emphasising the high stakes involved in apprehending the suspect.
