NSW Police are seeking assistance from the public following the discovery of a body in a burnt-out vehicle in north-west New South Wales. Emergency services were dispatched to a fire involving an SUV on the Kamilaroi Highway near Brewarrina, located approximately 787 kilometres from Sydney, on Sunday morning.
Upon extinguishing the flames, authorities found a body inside the charred remains of the car, which has yet to be identified. Detective Inspector Andrew Barnes has stated that the circumstances surrounding the incident suggest the death is suspicious. He urged anyone with information related to the case to step forward.
As investigations continue, Barnes mentioned that information received indicates a potential identity for the deceased, but results from further examinations are still awaited. The vehicle in question has been identified as a green 1996 Nissan Pathfinder station wagon, registered under NSW number CR21TG; however, it has been confirmed as unregistered.
Barnes assured the public that there is no ongoing threat to community safety. He emphasised the importance of collecting information, particularly from anyone in the vicinity on the day of the incident who may have captured relevant footage or details about the vehicle or its driver before it was set ablaze.
Local residents and anyone with pertinent information are encouraged to contact Bourke Police or reach out to Crime Stoppers at 1800 333 000. The police are taking all necessary steps to investigate the situation thoroughly.
