Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has announced a new solar power initiative aimed at helping apartment residents in New South Wales potentially save up to $600 on their annual energy bills. This initiative is part of a broader effort ahead of the federal election, with the government allocating $25 million to assist owners’ corporations and strata managers in installing shared rooftop solar panels on apartments.
During a press conference in Grayndler, Albanese highlighted the dual benefits of this initiative—benefitting residents financially while also contributing to lower emissions and a healthier environment. Currently, approximately 20% of homes in NSW are apartments, yet a mere 3.5% of these buildings are equipped with solar systems.
Chris Bowen, Minister for Energy and Climate, reinforced the importance of this initiative, noting its role in accelerating the transition to renewable energy for apartment dwellers. He mentioned that, since the current government took office, the proportion of electricity generated from renewable sources has risen significantly, from 33% to 46%. Bowen recognised this progress but also noted that the upcoming election will be crucial for the future of energy policy.
The Solar for Apartment Residents program will cover 50% of installation costs, providing up to $150,000 for each project. Applications are currently open for owners’ corporations of multi-unit dwellings with three to 55 units that have not had a solar installation in the last decade, with funding available until December 1 or until it runs out.
Albanese simultaneously seized the opportunity to criticise Opposition Leader Peter Dutton’s $331 billion nuclear energy proposal, which envisions building seven nuclear facilities across several Australian states. Albanese argued that Dutton’s plan is not beneficial for the environment, households, or energy efficiency, contrasting it with the current government’s focus on renewable solutions.
In summary, the solar initiative represents a significant step toward making renewable energy more accessible for apartment residents in NSW, with the government keen to highlight the economic and environmental advantages while also addressing alternative energy strategies proposed by the opposition.
