A Queensland family, the Robinsons, recently received a full reimbursement from ANZ after falling victim to a scam that jeopardised their dreams of homeownership. Sarah and Laine Robinson had located their ideal property in the Gold Coast hinterland when they received what they believed to be legitimate payment instructions from their conveyancer for a $252,000 settlement.
To ensure security, the couple chose to process the payment at an ANZ branch. Unfortunately, the bank teller was unaware that the email they received was fraudulent, which led to the loss of their significant funds.
In a surprising turn of events, ANZ stepped in and reimbursed the couple for the entire amount. In an official statement, the bank emphasised its commitment to safeguarding customers from scams, highlighting the complexities and rapid evolution of deceptive practices like business email compromise and invoice scams. ANZ is dedicated to enhancing their protective measures in line with emerging scam tactics and encourages customers to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity promptly.
This incident serves as a reminder of the growing threats posed by scammers and the importance of caution in financial transactions.
