Dr Ann O’Neill recounts the tragic events that unfolded over three decades ago when her estranged husband, Norman, murdered their two young children, Kyle, six, and Latisha, four, before taking his own life. On August 22, 1994, Norman broke into their home in Perth, carrying out a horrific act that left O’Neill gravely injured.

Despite the trauma, O’Neill expresses a surprising lack of bitterness towards Norman, whom she married at 17 after feeling pressured to do so. Initially, he appeared caring and devoted, but after their marriage, his controlling behaviour intensified, leaving her feeling isolated and subjected to emotional abuse. This pattern of abuse escalated after the birth of their second child, leading her to eventually seek separation at the age of 22.

O’Neill reflects on the common question posed to abuse survivors: why they didn’t leave sooner. She notes that ending a relationship with an abuser often increases risk, as separation is one of the most dangerous times for women. Following their separation, Norman’s harassment grew, manifesting as pleading messages and unannounced visits under the pretext of wanting to see the children. O’Neill recalls the fear induced by his volatile nature.

Months later, Norman presented O’Neill with divorce papers just days before he committed the horrific act, indicating a chilling methodical approach to his revenge. Dr Brian Sullivan of the Red Rose Foundation describes this act as an ultimate form of revenge against O’Neill for her desire for independence.

Since the deaths of her children, O’Neill has earned a PhD in trauma and now focuses on healing for others who have experienced extreme trauma. Her work aims to foster understanding rather than anger, stressing that connection is essential for healing and restoring faith in humanity.
