The annual rodeo in Stonehenge, a small farming community near Longreach, Queensland, is a significant event that defines the town’s identity, especially in a location lacking traditional facilities like sports fields or a town hall. The rodeo grounds serve as the primary social hub for the residents.
Earlier this year, heavy rains caused extensive flooding that took the community by surprise, affecting homes and the crucial showgrounds. Charmainne Batt, the secretary of the showgrounds, shared her experiences as her husband, a helicopter pilot, evacuated locals and moved livestock to safety amidst the rising waters. The community quickly realised the magnitude of the flooding when they received aerial images showing the devastation at the showgrounds.
As Batt inspected the damage, it became clear that the thick layer of mud covered not only the space but also thousands of dollars worth of catering equipment. The prospect of cancelling the rodeo was heartbreaking for many, as this event serves to unite the community and provide a much-needed break from the hardships they face. Celebrations such as these are vital for the local economy, especially in a close-knit community of only around 50 residents, all of whom were simultaneously attempting to restore their own properties.
Despite the daunting challenge of repairing the showgrounds before the August rodeo, help arrived unexpectedly. Batt encountered representatives from Farm Angels, a charity that supports farmers, who offered assistance. They mobilised volunteers to help with the clean-up and arranged for $20,000 in catering equipment and emergency funds to facilitate the event’s return.
The founder of Farm Angels, Tash Johnston, emphasised the pressing issues facing farmers today, expressing concern over the economic struggles that contribute to mental health crises within the community. She noted, “We lose a farmer every 10 days to suicide in this country,” and called for better support systems for those in agriculture.
Through collaborative efforts, the revival of the rodeo not only strengthens community bonds but also addresses the broader challenges that farmers face today. The support from organisations like Farm Angels highlights the significance of communal resilience and the importance of sustainability in farming practices.
