Ange Postecoglou has clarified that Mathys Tel did not initially reject a move to Tottenham before agreeing to a loan transfer on deadline day. The promising 19-year-old French winger, previously with Bayern Munich, has joined Spurs on loan for the current season, with an option for a permanent deal.

Contrary to reports suggesting that Daniel Levy had flown to Germany to speak with Tel, only for him to decline the offer, Postecoglou insisted the young player was merely deliberating a significant career decision rather than outright rejecting Tottenham. Over the weekend, Postecoglou held a Zoom conversation with Tel, focusing on football and ensuring the player felt comfortable with his choice.

“I think it’s a credit to him,” said Postecoglou. “He didn’t want to rush into anything and wanted to ensure his decision was right for him.” Addressing concerns regarding Tel’s commitment, the manager confidently affirmed, “Yes, 100 per cent,” further highlighting Tel’s ambition and desire to reach the pinnacle of football.

Tel is set to make his debut for Spurs in the upcoming Carabao Cup match against Liverpool, along with fellow new signing Kevin Danso. Tottenham holds a 1-0 lead following the first leg against Liverpool.
